Soil Texture & Capability
Every soil is a mix of sand, silt and clay — and that mix decides how much water it holds, how easily it works, and how deep roots go. The texture triangle names the twelve classes from those three percentages. This is where the capability assessment begins: three of the soil-physical qualities are read directly from where a soil falls on this triangle.

02 · Saudi Soils on the Triangle
The Kingdom's dominant soils

The numbered points on the triangle mark where each soil typically falls — most cluster toward the sandy corner, the defining challenge of arid-zone agriculture.

1Sandy AridisolC2–C3
Loamy sand → sandy loam
The Kingdom's most widespread agricultural soil, formed under arid conditions with little organic accumulation.
CharacteristicsCoarse-textured, low water-holding capacity (60–100 mm/m), low organic matter, often calcareous. Drains fast and needs frequent irrigation.
2Aeolian SandC4–CN
Sand
Wind-sorted sand of the dune fields and sand seas — the least developed and least fertile of the arable soils.
CharacteristicsStructureless fine-to-medium sand, near-zero water and nutrient retention. Where dunes are live, sand encroachment can bury a site entirely.
3Wadi FluvisolC1–C2
Loam → clay loam
River-deposited soils on wadi floors and alluvial channels — the Kingdom's most naturally capable arable land.
CharacteristicsLayered, finer-textured sediments with higher fertility and much better moisture retention than the surrounding sands. The prime target for cultivation.
4Tihama CoastalC1–C3
Sandy loam → loam
The flat, warm soils of the Red Sea coastal plain, workable year-round with a long growing season.
CharacteristicsSandy-to-loamy, level and easily mechanised. The main watch-point is capillary salt rise where the groundwater table sits shallow.
5Calcareous LoamC2–C4
Loam (high CaCO₃)
Carbonate-rich soils widespread across the Kingdom, often over a cemented calcrete hardpan.
CharacteristicsHigh calcium-carbonate content locks up phosphate (nutrient fixation); a shallow calcrete layer can restrict rooting depth to well under a metre.
6Alluvial FanC2–C4
Gravelly loam
Mixed material washed from the highlands onto piedmont fans and pediment zones of the Hejaz.
CharacteristicsVariable depth with high surface gravel and stones. Workability and mechanisation vary sharply over short distances, limiting large-scale operations.
03 · What Texture Decides
Three capability qualities read from here

A soil's position on the triangle sets, directly or in part, three of the seventeen land qualities:

Loams in the centre hold water well and work easily. Sands drain too fast to retain water; heavy clays hold water but seal, crack and resist tillage. Texture is the single most influential physical property of a soil — which is why it anchors the whole soil-physical group.

Which textures tend to which class
A tendency, not a rule. Texture strongly influences capability, but the final class always depends on the whole hectare — depth, salinity, slope. These are the directions texture pushes toward:

05 · How to Read the Triangle
Three percentages, one class

Read the three axes toward their labelled corners — % sand along the bottom, % clay up the left, % silt down the right. Follow the gridline for each value; where the three lines meet is the soil's texture class. The three percentages always sum to 100.

06 · Why Texture Matters Most Here
In an arid climate, texture is destiny

In a wet climate, poor texture can be forgiven — rain refills the soil often. In Saudi Arabia, where almost every drop is irrigated and water is the scarcest input, a soil that cannot hold water wastes it. A sandy soil may need watering every two or three days; a loam holds enough to stretch that to a week. Across a national irrigation budget, that difference is decisive — which is why texture, not fertility, is the first thing the capability assessment reads.

07 · The Three Properties Texture Sets
What changes as you move across the triangle
1Water holding

Rises from almost nothing in pure sand to high in loams, then stays high but harder to release in clays.

2Workability

Best in loams. Sands are loose but blow away; clays are heavy, sticky when wet and brick-hard when dry.

3Sealing & crusting

Low in sands, high in silts and clays — a surface crust after rain blocks infiltration and stops seedlings emerging.
